Haslametrics Debuts 23-24 Rankings

Erik Haslam of Haslametrics rolled out his preseason rankings this morning, signaling we are one step closer to the college basketball season.

Haslam’s rankings are well-regarded in the industry. They tend to be more conservative than others because they’re based on the previous three years of a team’s performance. Haslam explained a small tweak he made to this year’s rankings.

“The only difference I made this year was to place a higher rating on recent prestige to match teams returning a high percentage of minutes and scoring from the previous season. FAU probably would have landed around 60th without it. But because they bring back so many contributors from a team that finished last year 19th, the analytics placed them higher.”

Haslam is considered one of the four major analytics gurus in college basketball, with Ken Pomeroy, Evan Miyakawa and Bart Torvik rounding out the quartet. Haslam prides himself on being the alternative version of modern analytics.

“I like to think of myself as the Drudge Report of college basketball. The website is non-mainstream, has an old-school feel to it, and it’s meant to quickly give you the information you need. I don’t want to overload too many features on the website; I’m a believer in quality over quantity.”

In a thread on X (Twitter), Haslam explains his rankings are just an estimate and not the end all, be all.

“Strictly an anchoring point for each team, the influence of the baselines will gradually dissolve to nil over the course of the first two months of the season as actual results continue to roll in. For the time being, take the baselines for what they are: an estimate.”
