March Coaching Carousel Breakdown
Published
9 months agoon
At the beginning of every month, we’ll give you the most comprehensive coaching carousel coverage in college basketball. Here’s where everything stands on March 1 – the final edition of the coaching carousel breakdown.
Jobs marked with *** are already open.
High-Major Hot Seat
Tony Stubblefield (DePaul)***
DePaul is open. As of writing I would still consider Bobby Hurley one of the top candidates there. Porter Moser and Darian DeVries are other names briefly linked.
Mike Woodson (Indiana)
A late addition to this list – after being safe for most of the year the heat is on in Bloomington. Woodson has made the tournament the last two seasons, but finds himself in real jeopardy of not getting a fourth year at IU.
Kenny Payne (Louisville)
The biggest job of the cycle this spring. Whoever gets this job will likely impact how the rest of the carousel turns.
Juwan Howard (Michigan)
Michigan is having one of the worst seasons the program has seen in decades. Warde Manuel is reportedly very reluctant to get rid of Howard, but he might not be the one to make that decision.
Kevin Keatts (NC State)
Keatts likely earned some grace after last season’s performance, but the rumblings are back after a down year. It feels a year early in Raleigh.
Chris Holtmann (Ohio State)***
Holtmann is out and Jake Diebler is killing it so far. Will Ohio State get Rodney Terry’d?
Mike Boynton (Oklahoma State)
Oklahoma State has the lowest NIL budget in the conference and multiple sources believe that’s their focus for next year instead of paying Boynton’s buyout. This one could go either way at this point.
Dana Altman (Oregon)
Altman was said to be in a tournament or bust situation at the beginning of the year. We could see an early “retirement” from him after the season.
Wayne Tinkle (Oregon State)
Tinkle’s buyout saved him last year and this time around the school’s conference instability might give him one more chance. Another one that could go either way.
Jerod Haase (Stanford)
Stanford is no where near the tournament bubble after having high expectations at the beginning of the year.
Johnny Dawkins (UCF)
Tournament or bust for Dawkins.
Andy Enfield (USC)
This feels a year too early and it still does, but it’s a different era in college sports. We can’t rule out a change just yet.
Jerry Stackhouse (Vanderbilt)
Stackhouse reportedly signed an extension after last season and his buyout may be prohibitive. If Vandy is willing to put up the money, they’ll make a change.
Mike Hopkins (Washington)
The Hopkins era is likely coming to an end in Seattle.
Josh Eilert (West Virginia)***
The biggest what-if season in college basketball history, perhaps? The national search is ongoing.
Mid-Major Hot Seat
John Smith (Cal Poly)***
Cal Poly let go of John Smith today.
Kevin McGeehan (Campbell)
McGeehan is in the last year of his contract and a new league may signal a time for a change.
Reggie Witherspoon (Canisius)
Canisius will likely look for a new coach after this season.
Anthony Boone (Central Arkansas)
Boone hasn’t been able to win more than 11 games in his four-year tenure. This may be the end of the line in Conway.
Saah Nimley (Charleston Southern)***
With a general lack of interest in the job, Nimley has a chance to earn it outright with a strong finish to the season.
Dave McLaughlin (Dartmouth)
Dartmouth is staring down the barrel of another single-digit win season.
Mike Davis (Detroit Mercy)
Detroit Mercy is 1-29. This is likely it for Mike Davis.
Billy Taylor (Elon)
Received some intel suggesting a move could be made after only two seasons – which isn’t as uncommon as it used to be.
Chris Casey (Fairfield)***
Casey will likely have the interim tag removed at the end of the season.
Robert McCullum (Florida A&M)
The Rattlers are on pace for their fourth single-digit win season in seven years.
Jeremy Ballard (Florida International)
Ballard is likely safe, but will need to show progress next season.
Justin Hutson (Fresno State)
It’s been another disappointing season in Fresno for Hutson. His six year tenure will likely end this spring.
Edward Joyner, Jr. (Hampton)
Joyner’s 15-year tenure at Hampton is close to its end.
Matt Crenshaw (IUPUI)
Crenshaw hasn’t been able to get things going at IUPUI. They’re looking at their third straight single-digit win season.
Darrell Walker (Little Rock)
Little Rock has won eight straight games, giving Walker’s tenure new life.
Keith Richard (Louisiana Monroe)
We could see an early “retirement” from Richard after this year.
Tavaras Hardy (Loyola MD)
The wheels have fallen off at Loyola. Hardy will be a popular assistant candidate if he’s let go.
Dan D’Antoni (Marshall)
D’Antoni has two years left on his contract, but could “retire” after this season.
Greg Gary (Mercer)
Mercer lost on opening night to non-D1 Clark Atlanta and it hasn’t gotten much better for Greg Gary.
Dana Ford (Missouri State)
After an early January statement from the AD, it’s not looking good for Dana Ford. Is this the one for Ben McCollum?
Mark Slessinger (New Orleans)
One of the longest tenured coaches in the country could see his time in New Orleans come to an end.
Shane Burcar (Northern Arizona)
Burcar has one year left on his contract after this season, but the AD may be willing to make the move now.
Leonard Perry (Pacific)
It’s only been three years, but it’s been a bad three years. Perry is on the chopping block.
Steve Donahue (Penn)
Donahue is facing his worst season in years and intel suggests the Quakers may be looking to make a move.
Lorenzo Romar (Pepperdine)
The second iteration of the Romar era hasn’t gone quite like the first. This is likely the end for Romar.
Scott Pera (Rice)
The transition to the American has been tough for Rice. Pera hasn’t been able to sustain any success during his tenure.
Andrew Toole (Robert Morris)
We could see Toole look for a parachute somewhere else if he’s not let go.
Travis Ford (Saint Louis)
The buyout is large, but it sounds like Saint Louis will have the money. Does Chris May go too?
Carm Maciariello (Siena)
Fans are angry, but fans don’t make the decision. I’ve had sources say this one could go either way.
Steve Henson (UTSA)
Henson has gone 10-22 in consecutive seasons and looks destined to finish near that mark again.
Dane Fischer (William & Mary)
The buyout saved him last year, will it save him again? The Tribe has lost nine straight games.
