The Latest on Jared Grasso

Bryant University head coach Jared Grasso remains on a leave of absence, as we first reported on September 29.

On October 1, Grasso was involved in a hit-and-run car accident. Two days later, he turned himself in to North Smithfield Police headquarters, where he was officially charged with “Failure to Stop for Accident Resulting in Damage to Vehicle.” Grasso was booked, processed and released with an arraignment set for October 24.

As others have reported, this incident occurred after the fact and is not related to Grasso’s absence.

According to the police report obtained by Burner Ball, Grasso’s behavior was repeatedly described as “erratic.”

From the report, the responding officer says: “Jared stated there was “an attack going on.” He seemed to believe that there was a bigger conspiracy going on and indicated I was involved…He continued making statements about being attacked and being involved in some type of situation.”

Bryant University officials continue to remain silent about the exact nature of Grasso’s absence. Multiple sources confirmed there is an ongoing investigation into inappropriate behavior, with additional concerns about Grasso’s mental health.

There is currently no timetable for Grasso’s return, but sources familiar with the situation believe it’s unlikely he will coach another game at Bryant. The 43-year-old has spent the last five seasons as the head coach in Smithfield. He’s 79-67 with one regular season and conference tournament title.

Associate head coach Phil Martelli, Jr. is currently serving as interim head coach. He’s the son of Phil Martelli, Sr., who is also serving as interim head coach at Michigan.

Bryant opens their season on November 6 against Manhattan.
