The Latest On Aiden Sherrell

2024 consensus four-star center Aiden Sherrell was set to announce his commitment on August 13, but abruptly canceled last minute with no explanation.

On July 22, The 6-foot-11 Prolific Prep star cut his list down to a top-five of Alabama, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Texas. Alabama was considered the heavy favorite at the time, thanks to Sherrell’s relationship with former Crimson Tide assistant Bryan Hodgson. I’m told Hodgson leaving to become the head coach at Arkansas State was not a factor in the delay.

A source familiar with the situation indicated the delay is likely related to NIL compensation. Alabama’s collective is one of the best in the country, so it’s not a matter of how much they have, but how much they’re willing to give. The timing of five-star center Flory Bidunga’s commitment to Kansas is something to note. Word of his NIL package could’ve led Sherrell’s camp to ask for more.

What’s Next?

Now that Sherrell’s recruitment is seemingly open again, Texas is a school to keep an eye on. The Longhorns are the only team in the top-five that Sherrell hasn’t visited, but that could change soon. Rodney Terry’s crew is making a late push for the prized recruit and hopes to get him on campus in the coming weeks. I’m also told they have an NIL offer on the table that surpasses Alabama’s.

Another option for Sherrell is the G-League. Rivals’ Rob Cassidy reported there is no concrete evidence that they’ve had any serious discussions. Burner Ball is able to confirm that report, but the professional route is a backup plan that often materializes quickly. Louisville fans are familiar with situations like that.

Alabama is still a possible destination for Sherrell, despite the delay. There was talk earlier this spring of a commitment to the Tide with a reclassification to play next year, but that is now off the table. Reclassification at any school is unlikely this late in the summer due to some unmet academic requirements.

There is currently no timeline for an announcement and other schools have an opportunity to jump in late. Expect some movement on this recruitment in the coming weeks.
